Transformative Graduate Education Initiative TGE is a comprehensive university-wide program, spearheaded by former Vice President and Dean for Graduate Education Karen P. DePauw, med at revolutionizing graduate education experiences. This initiative pushes the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines to provide an innovative framework that encourages students' preparation for becoming trlblazers in their respective fields – whether as scientists, educators, scholars, engineers, artists, or future professionals.
The core values guiding TGE include Knowledge, Leadership, Scholarly Inquiry, and Social Responsibility. These pillars encompass a diverse range of scholarly activities and extracurricular opportunities that emphasize the application of innovative technologies, commitment to excellence through diversity and inclusivity, active engagement with communities, and support for interdisciplinary research and education. Designed beyond conventional degree programs, TGE fosters an inclusive academic community where traditional boundaries are transced.
TGE courses and programs are centered around four pillars:
Knowledge: Encourages students to conduct meaningful and innovative research and engage in scholarly inquiry.
Leadership: Prepares future faculty members and professional practitioners to assume roles with responsibility.
Scholarly Inquiry: Facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration, encouraging the use of cutting-edge technologies in teaching, learning, engagement, and global contexts.
Social Responsibility: Promotes the application of research for contemporary and global issues.
The Graduate School supports TGE by integrating it into its curriculum, ensuring that students are equipped with critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, dynamic leadership competencies, collaborative teamwork, ethical standards, and professional practices necessary for their future eavors.
The initiative is structured to revitalize teaching methods and enhance learning environments. Faculty members contribute to enriching the academic atmosphere through innovative pedagogies and research methodologies that align with TGE's pillars.

Future Professoriate Graduate Certificate: Avlable to graduate students from any degree-seeking program, this certificate offers nine credits focused on teaching skills and scholarly inquiry necessary for academic careers.
Citizen Scholar Recognition: An opportunity for students passionate about sharing knowledge with broader communities.
Interdisciplinary Research Honor Society IDR: Open to students engaged in interdisciplinary research projects.
Alpha Epsilon Lambda AEL Graduate Honor Society: A recognition program for graduate students across disciplines who excel academically and professionally.
Global Perspectives Fellowship: After completing the Future Professoriate Graduate Certificate requirements, eligible students can apply for this immersive learning experience focused on global trs in higher education.
Diversity Scholars Program: Provides resources and mentorship to students advocating for awareness, knowledge, and skills related to diversity and inclusion.
TGE is facilitated through collaborative programs hosted at Virginia Tech's innovative Graduate Life Center GLC. This hub serves as a physical space that encompasses the Graduate School administrative offices and graduate student apartments. The GLC not only supports academic growth but also fosters community development among students from diverse backgrounds, providing them with a supportive environment to thrive.
