Liaoning University has a history of cultivating postgraduate education for 40 years, which has been continuously promoted by its dedicated faculty. The enrollment began in September 1978 and gned the authorization to confer doctoral degrees in foreign economic thought theory in January 1984. Originally known as the Graduate Division established in 1977, it was upgraded into the Graduate Department of Liaoning University in April 1987 due to the expanding need for development. In 2003, the department renamed itself as the Graduate College and eventually transformed into the current Graduate School in July 2011. It is responsible for enrolling, nurturing, and awarding degrees to graduate students.
Liaoning University currently has a total of 1,267 full-time faculty members, including 283 professors, 504 associate professors, 121 doctoral supervisors, 555 master's supervisors, 83 personnel with State Council Special Allowance, two Cheung Kong Chr Professors, and one double-appointed academician.
The university boasts eight disciplines that confer doctoral degreesnamely Theoretical Economics, Applied Economics, Business Administration, Chinese Language and Literature, Philosophy, Law, Chemistry, and Statisticsand possesses eight post-doctoral research stations. Besides offering 26 master degree programs across these primary disciplines, it also has the capacity to admit students into eighteen master's degree authorizing categories within twenty-nine academic fields. In addition, it is recognized for its World Economics, National Economics, Finance as national key disciplines and another six provincial-level first-class key disciplines. Liaoning University features two national demonstration centers for experimental teaching, six provincial key research bases in ities and social sciences, eight national key laboratories, three engineering technology research centers at the provincial level, one engineering laboratory, eight provincial-level demonstration centers for experimental teaching, six joint labs for core and characteristic disciplines under central-local collaboration, twelve teaching experimental platforms supported by central finance, and nine provincial innovation teams in universities.
By October 2016, Liaoning University has enrolled a total of 6,936 graduate students including 506 full-time doctoral candidates, 5,973 full-time master's degree candidates, 329 part-time master’s candidates, and 128 individuals pursuing equivalent education for the master's degree.
