Meet Jessica Mtland, an experienced professional in higher education with Chinese settler ancestry from British Columbia. With two decades of experience across various roles within post-secondary institutions, Jessica now explores management consulting as her latest venture. She is currently a part of SFU's Master of Education MEd program in Educational Leadership - Post-Secondary.

The MEd program enhance educators' research capabilities and leadership skills while equipping them with innovative practices for diverse educational contexts upon graduation. Through insightful reflections, Jessica shares the transformative impact of her education, emphasizing the importance of connections and scholarly rigor in navigating the complex landscape of higher education leadership.

Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CHOOSE SFU AND THE LEADERSHIP POST-SECONDARY PROGRAM SPECIFICALLY?

A: I was an employee at SFU when colleagues recommed this program. Its relevance to my work as a higher education professional, coupled with its flexible nature my career goals and provides scholarly trning in understanding post-secondary systems and leadership, was what drew me towards it.

Q: CAN YOU NAME ANY MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES FROM THE PROGRAM THAT STOOD OUT TO YOU OR HAD A LASTING IMPRESSION?

A: The most impactful part of the program was connecting with classmates from various institutions and industries. My peers are exceptionally impressive, and their engagement during our faculty-led discussions enriched my learning experience tremously. Additionally, I value the lasting connections made with the faculty, particularly the insightful conversations we shared.

Q: HOW HAVE YOU APPLIED THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED FROM THE PROGRAM IN YOUR POST-GRADUATION WORK?

A: The research skills honed during this program have enabled me to analyze and tackle systemic challenges in my work effectively. Understanding policy and leadership has provided a robust framework for my management approach with staff and informed my perspective on governance within higher education institutions. With the amalgamation of practical experience and academic trning, I started consulting practice that is grounded in both expertise and scholarly foundation.

Q: WITH YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU PROVIDE TO NEW AND CURRENT STUDENTS AT SFU?

A: The program's cohort interactions are essential for deepening your knowledge and learning. Without the network of classmates or mentorship from faculty members, my professional growth would have been incomplete. I recomm making the most out of this academic space; it should be not only a safe environment to explore ideas but also a rigorous place to develop research skills and scholarly insight.
