Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection is hosting an intensive three-week summer program for graduate students, med at exploring the complexities of contested landscapes, alternative archival resources, and counternarratives in the field of garden and landscape studies.
Program Overview:
The Dumbarton Oaks Graduate Summer Program focuses on enhancing knowledge across disciplines in landscape and environmental history. It promote innovative scholarship through a deep dive into the historiography and methodologies of landscape and environmental history writing. The program emphasizes critical inquiries that challenge traditional frameworks, sources, and concepts related to sovereignty, authority, authenticity, democracy, race, ger, and identity.
Workshop Components:
The program consists of:
Engaging with seminal works in landscape and environmental history from Dumbarton Oaks' Garden Library.
Visiting historical sites like Jamestown and Williamsburg, Virginia, to explore the development of counter-narratives in public discourse.
Collaborating with visiting scholars on practices of inquiry that foreground questions related to place-based narratives and field studies.
Eligibility:
PhD candidates with a dissertation project underway or advanced MLA students including those who graduated between May 2022 - May 2024 are eligible. Applicants from all disciplines researching garden, landscape, and environmental histories are welcome.
Participation Requirements:
Full immersion commitment during the three-week program, with classes Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., followed by field trips or research time.
On-campus housing for weekdays except for scheduled closures, access to Dumbarton Oaks' Garden Library and collections.
Support:
Successful candidates will receive on-campus accommodation, lunches, library privileges, travel support arranged through our partner agency according to the Travel Policy. International students are eligible; however, J-visa sponsorship is not provided. A stip is not included in this program.
Application Process:
Prospective applicants must submit a letter of interest, a 500-word abstract about their dissertation or thesis recent MLAs should provide a statement on previous research interests, and a current CV. All documents along with one recommation letter need to be submitted through the Embark portal by February 15th, 2024.
