Cultural and Educational Trip to Guangxi Medical University
In an enriching exchange of cultural experiences, the students from M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences embarked on a journey to Guangxi Medical University from October 16th to 23rd, 2023. As part of a collaborative program organized by the Department of Soft Skills Competency DSSC in tandem with Guangxi Medical University's Office of International Education and Cooperation, this week-long trip saw of twenty-one enthusiastic medical students.
Established as a cornerstone for cultural understanding among peers and an opportunity to gn insight into medical education at Guangxi Medical University GXMU, the m was clear: to foster cross-cultural appreciation and exposure in healthcare practices.
GXMU, located in Nanning, capital city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, has been a beacon for excellence in liver cancer research and treatment, thalassemia management, among other medical conditions. Renowned as one of the leading institutions in China offering comprehensive medical education to international students, GXMU is distinguished by its rigorous academic standards and innovative teaching methods.
The educational itinerary was packed with enriching activities including tours through modern facilities such as the Medical Learning Center and Advanced Clinical Skills Laboratory at Guangxi Medical University. The students were awestruck by a demonstration of fundamental resuscitation skills conducted by their counterparts from GXMU, followed by hands-on experience with laparoscopic simulation exercises.
A visit to GXMU's First Affiliated Hospital provided an up-close look at state-of-the-art medical practices. Students toured the Hematology-Oncology Unit and were given a glimpse into the Stem Cell Transplantation Unit, Nuclear Medical Unit, Radiotherapy Unit, as well as the Surgical Day-Care Ward. Accompanied by knowledgeable hospital staff who detled operational procedures, each visit offered unique insights.
Cultural immersion was an integral part of this educational experience as students had dedicated time for traditional Chinese activities like T Chi lessons and crafting lanterns and mooncakes. A week retreat to scenic spots in Nanning, including QingXiu Mountn Scenic Area and GuangXi Ethnic Minority Museums, provided the perfect bl of relaxation and cultural exploration.
The gastronomic aspect of the trip was also noteworthy as students indulged in local delicacies like luo-shi fen mung bean jelly and were introduced to the vibrant variety of milk teas avlable across Nanning. The accessibility of public transport allowed for easy navigation around city attractions such as the 3 Street 2 Alley commercial area.
Reflecting on their experience, Eugene Foo, a Year Three student sd, This study tour not only provided us with physical exploration opportunities but also sparked journeys of discovery, fostering understanding and personal growth. Teh Yu Hao from Year Two echoed similar sentiments, expressing his desire for the trip to be exted due to its enriching impact.
Cultural and Educational Exchange at Guangxi Medical University
In collaboration with UTAR Education Foundation UTAR - a wholly-owned entity under UTAR Education Foundation 200201010564578227-M, the exchange program provided students with a comprehensive understanding of medical education practices, cultural insights and personal development through hands-on experience and cultural immersion activities.
