Brown University Launches 'Open Graduate Programs' with $2 Million Mellon Foundation Grant
Providence, RI Brown University – In recognition of its commitment to fostering a diverse and innovative academic environment, Brown University has been awarded a generous $2 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This funding will be used to launch Open Graduate Programs: Enhancing Graduate Education at Brown, an innovative pilot program that offer doctoral students the opportunity to pursue a master's degree in a secondary field concurrently with their primary doctoral studies.
The six-year pilot initiative includes support for 24 doctoral candidates from any ities or istic social science department. These students will have access to graduate programs across various fields, encompassing physical sciences, life sciences, engineering, as well as ities and social sciences. The program exts the standard five years of full financial d and health benefits provided by the Graduate School at Brown University by an additional year.
Through this initiative, Brown ints to empower doctoral students with a more robust educational experience that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, which is anticipated to better equip them for today's complex job market demands. Furthermore, it aligns with Brown's tradition of offering students an open and flexible curriculum that fosters intellectual growth across disciplines.

This initiative has created new opportunities for interdisciplinary research and education by attracting six distinguished scholars from the field of ities, as well as providing funding for collaborative projects and advanced coursework.
In addition to strengthening graduate programs across the board, Brown's initiatives are also geared towards enhancing students' global perspectives through programs like Brown in the WorldThe World at Brown, a project launched with a $498,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This program provides future scholars of ities with international experiences to deepen their understanding and expand their networks.
